ONICS / 2025
Lexicography

SYNOPSIS
The suffix -onic is contained within a number of words central to various aspects of architectural culture (e.g. history, geometry, identity, etc): canonic, conic, iconic, tectonic, architectonic, mnemonic, platonic, etc. When expanded into other areas such as music, sound, chemical worlds, politics, and power (e.g. hegemonics, pandemonics) and more, a strange cross section unrolls through a vast territory of fields, united through -onics. In what amounts to a fusion of a limited dictionary, a truncated atlas, and a technical manual, ONICS uses specific words as the launching point for expanded meanings and definitions that range from the ordinary to hyper-obscure.

Using both historical images and concepts as well as those from the current work and ideas of NMDA, ONICS is above all a book about signs and meaning in many aspects of culture, with an emphasis on the art and science of  architecture and music / sound.

The organization of the book is set by the number of letters in each term, beginning with 5 and ending with 13.  As in a dictionary, the terms simply flow from one to the next with texts and images. The terms are:

05            Conic, Ionic, Sonic, Tonic
06            Bionic, Iconic, Ironic, Japonic, Phonic
07            Avionic, Canonic, Hedonic, Laconic,
08            Diatonic, Duo - Sonic, Harmonic, Tectonic, Mnemonic, Photonic, Platonic
09            Aeroponic, Hegemonic, Monotonic, Symphonic
10             Anachronic, Electronic, Histrionic, Hydroponic, Inharmonic, Megaphonic,
Monophonic, Oxymoronic, Pandemonic, Polyphonic, Supersonic, Synchronic
11             Chameleonic, Geotectonic, Nonharmonic, Telharmonic
12            Dodecaphonic, Los Angelonic, Philharmonic, Pyschotronic, Stereophonic
13            Architectonic, Hercotectonic, Nonelectronic
